It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the Honorable Alan Cooke Kay (ret.), district court judge for the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii.

Judge Kay demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the rule of law and always judged with integrity, diligence, wisdom and compassion. Judge Kay also had deep-rooted and abiding love for Hawaii and its people. Although Judge Kay presided over hundreds of cases during his decades on the bench, he was particularly proud of his decision in favor of the Kamehameha Schools.

Judge Kay was a lifelong resident of Honolulu, having graduated from Punahou High School, Princeton University and the University of California Berkeley School of Law. He received his commission as a United States District Court Judge on September 15, 1986 and served as chief judge from 1991 to 1999, assuming senior status on January 2, 2000. He will be missed by family, his colleagues and many friends.
